Matt Urmy + Dave Cash

03/08/2011 - 20:35
Pop Up Playgroup, 52-54 Grand Parade, Brighton.

Matt Urmy is based in Nashville and produces songs steeped in a rootsy Southern world. His latest album ‘Sweet Lonesome’ was recorded ‘live’ in the old ‘Quonset Hut’, where Patsy Cline recorded and brings out the best of that room’s sound, the urgency of the music, the voices of guests including Mary Gaultier and Matt’s own voice, which lingers somewhere between Tom Waits, John Prine and Rod Picott.
He’s also a ‘a really fine poet and songwriter, and a great live renderer of it all (RB Morris, poet) who’ll be bringing some of his poetry to the stage. Take a listen on his website to some really great music and poetry.

MC’ing the show and presenting some of his own poetry, is a DJ who has championed Matt and will be featuring him throughout his sunday evening country show on BBC Radio Kent show. Dave Cash is more than a DJ. His early pirate days included that magic collaboration with Kenny Everett, to create the Kenny & Cash combo on Radio London. Dave signed up as one of the original BBC Radio 1 team alongside John Peel and Tony Blackburn. He next became part of the team that first launched Capital radio, where he reconnected with Everett for more mayhem. On top of his DJing, Dave Cash has developed his media training consultancy, involved in all aspects of radio. Dave is also a best seller author of novels, a screenplay on the go, who also loves to write poetry. Tonight we’ll get a chance to hear from a bit of a legend, who just wants to pop up on stage and offer a few words...

And the stage is at another nifty little venue I’ve discovered. Used to be sad old Hector’s House, but it took on a new mantle during Brighton Festival and it’s a quirky little place that will be just right for this bill. Reckon I’ll just sit back and enjoy it alongside y’all!
